OVERVIEW
Photographer Fritz Hoffmann’s work in China from 1994 to 2018 makes a significant contribution to the historical record of a remarkable period of reform and opening in the Communist nation. In the years following Mao’s revolution, Hoffmann was the first foreign photographer to receive resident journalist accreditation from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with permission to be based in Shanghai. Shanghai was his home from 1995 to 2008, encompassing some of the most transformative years of China’s economic development. His photographs document China at the close of the millennium, as the nation underwent one of the most profound transformations in its modern history.
