OVERVIEW

The work of photographer Fritz Hoffmann in China from 1994 to 2018 makes a valuable contribution to the historical document of this remarkable period of reform and opening in the Communist nation. Hoffmann was the first photographer after Mao’s revolution in 1949 to receive journalist accreditation by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with permission to reside outside of Beijing, the political capital. Shanghai was his home from 1995 to 2008, some of the fastest growth years during China’s economic development. This collection of Hoffmann’s photography documents the close of the millennium and the advent of “New China.”
